The Northeast Valleys

In Example is...

...a free-improv and original music duet comprised of Isaac Luxon & Eliot Cardinaux on guitar and piano respectively. Eliot and Isaac first met in late 2009, and they were immediately drawn into each others' musical worlds. From their first sporadic sessions, they found a rich collaborative palette already at their fingertips. Since then they have been working with these colors and fusing them together to create a multi-layered sound-sculpture of structurally sonic and deep-feeling music. Currently, Eliot and Isaac have been recording in different spaces to put forth what is to be an intriguing debut release.

Isaac Luxon's musical practice began at age seven with the alto saxophone, and since then, has expanded to include clarinet, tenor saxophone, guitar, bass guitar, and drum kit. During high school, with guitar as his main instrumental focus, Isaac began an in-depth, independent study of jazz, blues, and funk music, with a hankering for improvised sound, sonic sculpturing, and extended technique. After two years in the Jazz and African American Music program at UMass Amherst, Isaac began developing an alternative teaching practice for use in private lessons, and performing with bands such as the reggae/jazz fusion group Mo Ambesa and Groove Shoes Funk Orchestra. While in the Pioneer Valley area, Isaac worked with such artists as Arturo O'Farrill, Jason Robinson, Adam Rudolph, Matana Roberts, and Joe Bowie. At present, Isaac lives in Vermont where he maintains his vocation of teaching, his process of composing, and his practice of musical life.

Eliot Cardinaux found his love of music at a young age, where in Dayton, OH, he heard the sounds of jazz trailing out of the garage on his father's radio. He traveled to New York after high school, and soon found his niche among the progressive and avant-gardists of the city. He remained in New York for five years, after which he settled in the respite of Amherst, Massachusetts, to pursue a quiet life of composing, and writing. Eliot has been seen playing with the likes of David Binney, Tyshawn Sorey, and Pete Robbins, among others. In addition to In Example, he is now a traveling member of several ensembles, continuing to perform along the east coast. His other bands include Gestures, Bosse/Cardinaux duo, the Ryan Blotnick group, Sean Ali's Mudbath Orchestra and more.
